APOLLO BAY
STUDENTS at dilapidated Apollo Bay P-12 College are increasing efforts to have their dodgy classrooms replaced.
The students launched two petitions yesterday, asking for $2 million through the Federal Government's education revolution program and for extra funding from the State Government for stage two of the school's masterplan.
The school is due $850,000 through the education revolution program, but a recent rise in student numbers means it now should qualify for $2 million.
State opposition education spokesman Martin Dixon, who visited the school recently, said student safety was a major concern.
``The thing that struck me is the safety, because if you have water running freely through the walls and the ceilings, the electrical appliances could become dangerous,'' Mr Dixon said.
``I was down here three years ago and the school is no better now than what it was then, which isn't good enough.''
Mr Dixon said the school needed as much funding as possible to redevelop the tattered classrooms.
``Originally they missed out narrowly on the $2 million funding, but they now have enough students,'' he said. ``I think it's only fair, considering the state of the school, that they receive that funding.''
Polwarth MP Terry Mulder said he had joined Mr Dixon and Corangamite Liberal candidate Sarah Henderson to help the students launch their petition.
``The students are very passionate about this matter,'' Mr Mulder said.
``I believe the Department of Education should conduct immediate safety checks on the school and I have sent a letter to Bronwyn Pike (State Education Minister) asking her to do so.''
