SCHOOLS RETURN TO THE SAME BRUMBY GOVERNMENT PROBLEMS

Despite the Brumby Government's mantra that education is its number one priority, Victorian students and teachers return to school today to the same problems they encountered last year, Shadow Minister for Education Martin Dixon said today.
"You cannot trust the Brumby Government to actually deliver on its repeated but hollow promises," Mr Dixon said.
"In fact John Brumby does not seem to care about education, as he hands over management of education more and more to the Federal Government."
Students and teachers return to school today with a list of Brumby Government failures:
- Schools requiring urgent maintenance.
- Increasing violence and bullying in schools.
- Bungled spending and administration of the BER.
- Confusing red tape and bureaucratic requirements imposed by an increasingly centralised Department of Education.
- An education department overseen by a part time minister.
- The lowest funding per student of all Australian states and territories.
- Diminishing ability of school principals and communities to make the education decisions that best suit their needs.
"The Brumby Government's incompetence in its handling of the education system has seen teachers and parents continually frustrated," Mr Dixon said.
"Victoria's principals and teachers continue do a great job under trying circumstances and I wish them well in the coming year."
